Hair straighteners and straightening
Hair straightening is a process that many women wish to try at some time or other, unless their hair is naturally completely straight. Hair can either be straightened permanently (until it grows out), using chemicals of some description (see the menu on the left for details), or it can be straightened temporarily either by using hair straighteners or by blow drying your hair whilst using a styling brush. Using a hair dryer and a styling brush is very difficult on the back of one's own head.

Therefore, the easiest way to temporarily straighten your hair before a night out is to use hair straighteners. There is a huge choice of hair straighteners on the market today, so choosing the right pair can be a mind boggling decision.
However, it is agreed upon by professionals that hair straighteners with solid ceramic plates are the best, as they spread the heat more evenly and are therefore less damaging to the hair than metal plates, which can exhibit "hot spots".
For a sleek and smooth finish, comb the section of the hair that you are about to straighten and let the hair straightening iron follow the comb down the hair. My favourite hair straighteners are those made by GHD (GHD stands for Good Hair Day). GHD have solid ceramic plates and come in a range of sizes and colours. The latest incarnation (GHD mark IV) even features auto switch off and automatic multiple voltage selection when travelling.
If you have time, allow your hair to dry naturally after shampooing and conditioning it, before using straightening irons. This will reduce the amount of heat that you need to apply to your hair and therefore reduce the risk of damage. Hair should be dry before using heated irons on it. It is adviseable in any event to apply a product to your hair that will help to protect it from heat damage. Rub the product together with the palms of your hands and then massage it evenly through the hair, paying special attention to the ends which are older and therefore more susceptible to damage and splitting.
If you are comfortable with using a blow dryer and a styling brush, you can find out how to blow dry your hair straight here.
